Core Facility Electron Microscopy and Raman spectroscopy

Institute of Scientific Instruments of the CAS

Cutting-edge technology

Open access

Applied research

Czech-BioImaging is a national research infrastructure for biological and medical imaging. It is a distributed infrastructure of leading imaging facilities in the Czech Republic. The infrastructure provides an open access to a wide range of imaging technologies and expertise to all scientists in the Czech Republic and from abroad by a unified and coordinated logistics approach.

The aim of Czech-BioImaging is:

  • to enable a permanent access to cutting edge imaging technologies and expertise in imaging to scientists, which do not have available at their own institutions,
  • to increase awareness and knowledge of biological and medical imaging,
  • to support mutual cooperation of scientists and sharing of best practices and knowledge.

The Core Facility Electron Microscopy and Raman Spectroscopy (ISI-EM) at the Institute of Scientific Instruments of the CAS serves as a dedicated research infrastructure, offering support services (full service mode as well as open access) to academic institutions and industrial companies engaged in fundamental research. The facility’s operations are motivated by particular application requirements and insightful user feedback. Our goal is to upgrade the technology available in the labs.

The research activities are intrinsically linked to the areas of expertise encompassed by the three scientific groups whose members actively contribute to the facility’s operations. The collaborative efforts between these groups and the Core Facility facilitate a dynamic exchange of knowledge and expertise, ensuring that the research endeavors undertaken by the facility are closely aligned with the latest advancements and developments within their respective scientific domains.

Our mission is to provide open access to advanced technologies, state-of-the-art devices, and cutting-edge imaging methods for our users, while specializing in applications that demand extreme conditions.

Our Excellence

  • Room temperature SEM, cryo-SEM, FIB-SEM
  • Multimodal imaging in SEM (SE, BSE, EDX, CL)
  • Quantitative STEM imaging and analysis, 4D-STEM (PNBD)
  • Python libraries for image processing
  • Raman microscopy and spectroscopy, including micromanipulation techniques
  • Hyperspectral (HS) imaging
  • Biological sample preparation for SEM, cry-SEM, TEM
  • Adaptation of existing methods for special applications requiring extreme conditions for imaging and analysis
  • 3D data analysis using the Amira software, labVIEW, MATLAB
  • In-house developed Raman spectrum database „RamanBase“

Access to the services provided by the laboratory is facilitated by inclusion in the extensive Czech-BioImaging and Euro-BioImaging infrastructure networks. These collaborative networks not only contribute to funding the facility’s operations but also provide expert guidance and feedback, ensuring that the services rendered maintain the highest standards of quality.
